Christmas Gift Ideas for a Step-Mom (Bonus Mom)

I hope that these meaningful gift ideas help to lighten the load for you this holiday season, or.. for any occasion, really!

It can be challenging to buy gifts for step-parents, especially in the earlier days of their involvement. This can be an incredibly humbling, uncomfortable, and potentially awkward experience. I can recall the lump in my throat as I helped my son to craft a gift for his step-mom on Mothers Day one year. I won’t sugar coat it; it was hard, but I have no regrets. Again, refinement by fire. I believe that acts of service like this can help to soften your heart towards a step-parent and show your child that you’re willing to come alongside them, and that you are for them. There is no such thing as too much love for a child, even if it hurts our mama-hearts sometimes to share something so special with another who we did not choose.

Here are my top suggestions for meaningful step-parent gifts:

1. A homemade wheat bag (Magic bag)

If you have a sewing machine, this is a very simple project that you can do with your child. It’s as simple as cutting the material to your desired shape, folding it ‘inside-out’, sewing around 3 edges, turning it right-side-out, filling with wheat or rice, and sewing it closed. This is a practical and personal gift, and one that we are always excited to give!

2. Stepping stone making kit

My son gifted this to my husband (his step-dad) one year, and we thought it was really thoughtful. I like this gift because it’s something that they can do together, and can sit in a garden or on a front step for years to come.

3. Preserves

Even if you don’t have much experience canning or preserving food, it’s a great skill to learn with your kids and can be an affordable, practical gift.

If this is a Christmas gift, I highly suggest making this canned cranberry juice that can be paired with a can of soda water and a lime in a festive holiday gift pack.

Here is a simple cranberry juice recipe that I’ve used myself, both ways:

4. Bonus Mom blanket

This one is as simple as a few Amazon clicks, but it’s cozy and personal.

5. Bonus Mom necklace

Also a simple click, but comes with a sweet package.

That’s a wrap on my quick round-up of gift ideas. Have others? I’d love to hear them!
